Our home was Peikkola hut (Troll's place) which was located at a distance of a few kilometres from Levi. Equipment included all the conveniences, in other words the fireplace, firewood, reindeer skins and sleeping bags and small outdoor toilet hut. Bikes from left Marko's BMW F650GS Dakar, Timo's KTM 640 Adventure and Pekka's BMW R1100GS. All riders wore handlebar mitts designed for snowmobiles. With mitts and the grip heaters thin neoprene glove was enough for riding even in the temperatures around -10 C. Peikkola entrance. Evening at Peikkola. Timo melts the sausage, Kassu and Pekka are just staring at fire.
A winter motorcyclist melts in the lake Immeljärvi. Feet are already OK but shoulders and hands still suffer from the long day in the saddle. Timo wants to have power to his GPS. The best way is to take current from bike because alkali batteries will not last long in cold and lithium batteries of the AA size (á 5 euros) will become too expensive in the long run. At night the temperature had been about -10 C. We hoped more than that to find out how bikes would start after spending the night out. Now there was no start problems what so ever.
Marko is pretending not to notice the police forces of Kittilä but suspects that there is too much pressure in the rear tyre. Obviously the front tyre felt slippery too and Marko checks the pressure also there. The whole group at the top of Levi fjell. From left Timo Laaksoviita, Pekka Heikkinen, Kalervo Kaltio, Kimmo Neuvonen, Marko Savela and Ari Peltola. Photo by Antti Sallinen of Lapin Kansa newspaper.
Snowboarders are surprised by heavy enduro bikers. Road which rises to the top was icy and slippery. Riding downhill was most exciting. Bustle at Kärcher K1NG. Pekka Heikkinen receiving an autograph from Kari Tiainen. There is Richard Sainct observing in the background.
Levi's best outdoor restaurant, a mobilized Piaggio Ape grill. Kimmo observing snowmobile race from the saddle of KTM. Break on trip from Levi to Rovaniemi. Particularly in the snowfall riding in the dark was especially strange experience.
Unexpected travellers may appear in the middle of snowstorm. Have you ever seen a more beautiful sight in winter roads. Camera's auto focus has been locked to big snowflakes instead of the target.
Michelin T63 rear tyre of Africa Twin. There are now 3.000 kms behind which can be seen from the wear of middle line studs.
The pictures have been scanned from the slide originals with the HP Scanjet 3c scanner and HP Scanjet Slide Adapter. Brightness and contrast adjustments has been made in PSP program as well as the removal of dust marks.
